  • Epic is about exposing the best skippers from the best fishing locations in New Zealand, to the world.

We’re about a sense of pride and professionalism and an unmistakable passion for fishing adventures. Epic is synonymous with fishing sustainability and respect to the health of our fisheries.

We’re about a team dedicated to sharing some of the most enthralling fishing experiences on the planet.

  • The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, for now and for future generations.

By following the Tiaki Promise, you are making a commitment to New Zealand. To act as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home.

  • Respect is paid to our fishing grounds at all times, our crews consistently explore and scout new kingfish locations to ease as much pressure on fish stocks as possible. We have lower limit allowances for our crews of just one Kingfish per client. With intimate knowledge of the breeding and behavioral habits of the fish that live in and pass through our waters, crews fish mindfully of each individual species.

Sustainability is at the forefront of our business model and we aim to protect a healthy fishery for future generations. We have worked closely with NIWA and assist where we can in any research to ascertain accurate breeding and migratory stats of New Zealand Kingfish and other species.

  • Zero tolerance for rubbish from our charters or customers. Rubbish bins are provided onboard and skippers are encouraged to stop and pick up any observed floating rubbish at sea.

  • Just to make your trip that little bit more EPIC. We provide as part of the charter fee the very best fishing rods and reels available. We use Jigstar rods and Maxel reels for overheads and the best spin gear from Daiwa (Saltiga 1800). That way we know with confidence that we have given you the angler the best possible chance to land your personal best fish on an Epic Adventures fishing charter.

  • All Epic Boats are from kiwi boat builder Senator. We have tried several others but Senator boats provide the most stable, and comfortable platform for our guests. We highly recommend you check them out if you are considering buying your own boat.

Why choose Epic Adventures?

Sustainability

We are strict with what we allow customers to take/catch/kill. Kingfish is limited to one fish per customer, other species are restricted to the local catch limits. Hunting guides limit the take based on the season and situation.

Our Vision

To be the ‘go-to’ company for outdoor fishing adventures in New Zealand. Providing an epic and knowledgeable experience on board with the team.

Our Methods

Epic largely fish with live baits ‘livies’, we do a range of jigs on board for the days livies don’t work as well.

Located in stunning Whitianga, Coromandel,
New Zealand

Whitianga is the tourism centre of the Coromandel with some world-class accommodation and attractions such as the Lost Spring day spa complete with thermal fed pools with waterfalls and massage rooms perched up in huts amongst the trees. Lots of fun in around town for the kids, including fun zone, animal parks, mini putt, swimming holes and paint-ball all just minutes drive from town.

Whitianga is also home to Mercury bay and the hub of recreational fishing activity on the Coromandel peninsula. It’s position halfway up the peninsula makes it an attractive home base to reach a vast range of pumping fishing spots and puts you in short driving distance of world-famous beaches and bays such as Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove, as well as some world-class bushwalks. Whitianga boasts nightlife with restaurants and bars open late.

Epic fishing methods

  • When you first leave the wharf, you will spend the first hour or so ‘gathering’ the bait-fish you need to help ensure you the best chance of hooking your personal best fish. The Shallow bays around the Whitianga are good sources of live baits year-round. Once your live bait tanks are full you are good to go.

Your skipper will then motor you out to the locations that are proving to be the most productive for the time of year and he will also bait you up and hand you the gear to use (Usually the very best gear – Jigstar roads paired with either Maxel or Daiwa, Saltiga 1800 reels). Then using the powerful  Simrad marine electronics onboard he will tell you exactly the depth to drop, then it's a case of waiting for one of these guys to arrive - Game on!

  • Epic Adventures provide fishing charters full of drop offs, seamounts, deep water pins that are ideal for Jigging. We normally recommend mechanical jigging and use jigs from Catch fishing. However we have had some success recently as well with slow jigs.

Be warned, mechanical jigging can be physically demanding and once the big Kingies hit, the struggle becomes real!

  • From Early October through to the end of Summer (late March) the water is warm and we see fish across the whole water column. The boats are equipped with rods suitable for throwing poppers should the occasion arise. This is an exciting way to fish, as you can often see the fish chasing your popper on the surface and the big splash when they hook up gets everyone’s heart pumping!

There is no better sight (or sound) for a fisherman than to see a sudden explosion on the surface and the popper being smashed and the reel starts screaming at you... ZZZZZZ - beautiful!
